Music Graduate Student Association Conference

The Music Graduate Student Association at Case Western Reserve University, in association with the Department of Music and the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities, is pleased to announce an upcoming graduate student conference, to be held on October 2-3, 2020. Entitled “Character, Caricature, Characterization,” this conference brings together scholars, performers, and educators who engage with the various meanings and incarnations of “characters” across music scholarship and practice. Our speakers will explore topics including musical alter egos, cinematic characters, representations of gender and sexuality, gestures in sacred music, mental illness, musical theater characters, and several others.

In addition to paper sessions and lecture-recitals, the conference will feature keynote presentations by Dr. Kyra Gaunt (University at Albany) and Dr. Martha Feldman (University of Chicago).

While this conference will have music at its center, our aim is to attract people from across the humanities and related fields in the sciences, including but not limited to film, folklore, literary criticism, and psychology.

The Music Graduate Student Association (MGSA) at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) is pleased to announce a conference for graduate students (including recent graduates) to be held on October 2-3, 2020. Entitled “Character, Caricature, Characterization,” this conference seeks to bring together scholars, performers, and educators who engage with the various meanings and incarnations of “characters” across music scholarship and practice, including operatic and cinematic characters, musical alter egos, mimetic gesture (e.g., rhetorical figures, onomatopoeia, etc.), expression in ensemble or opera conducting, musical theater, and K-12 instruction in dramatization, show choir, and voice (e.g., storytelling, vocal and tonal inflection, gender bias).In addition to paper sessions and lecture-recitals, the conference will feature keynote presentations by Professor Kyra Gaunt (University at Albany) and Professor Martha Feldman (University of Chicago).

Proposals for 20-minute papers or 45-minute lecture-recitals are invited from graduate students working in all music disciplines and related fields in the humanities and beyond, including but not limited to historical musicology, historical performance, ethnomusicology, music education, music theory, and modern performance.

Proposals are due June 17 and should include an abstract of no more than 300 words, as well as the presenter’s name, institutional affiliation, and any special technology or instrument requests. Abstracts should be sent as Word documents and should exclude any information that may identify the author.Please send proposals or questions to Bethany Nickel.
