How to Audition and Enroll

The Department of Music is pleased to offer a variety of ensembles that are open to all CWRU affiliated individuals (faculty, staff, students, alumni, and University Circle community members).

Auditions take place during the first week of the fall semester August 26-30, 2019.

1st-year students: Please make sure to attend our Music Ensembles Overview during Discover Week (August 22, 2019, 3 p.m.).

Returning Students: Undergraduate music majors (winds, brass, percussion, and strings)will be assigned an audition time, which will be communicated by email from the Department of Music before August 10.

Ensemble Course Registration (MUEN)
Please make sure to enroll in the appropriate ensemble course (MUEN) in SIS before drop/add ends. Most ensembles are offered at variable credit (0-1 units).

BANDS/ORCHESTRAS
Jazz Ensemble I
Jazz Ensemble II

Membership is open to all students for both Jazz 1 and Jazz 2, but with audition only for placement into Jazz I. Auditions are held the first week of classes during the class times for both Jazz I and Jazz II. Symphonic Winds
Participation for the Symphonic Winds is open to all CWRU and CIM undergraduate and graduate wind, brass, and percussion players by audition only. An audition is required for seating and section placement each academic year. Auditions for the Symphonic Winds are held during the first week of classes and consist of prepared excerpts of your choice and scales. Please visit the Symphonic Winds page to sign up for your audition slot and for more information. 

*All wind and brass players or percussionists joining Symphonic Winds or Symphony Orchestra will need to sign up for auditions through the Symphonic Winds audition page.

Spartan Marching Band
Membership in the Spartan Marching Band is available to current CWRU students who play wind or percussion instruments. There are no auditions for wind players, but auditions for the drumline take place during the Preseason Training Camp. 

Symphony Orchestra
The Case University Circle Symphony Orchestra is open to all CWRU students, faculty, and community members by audition who play a woodwind, brass, percussion or string instruments and who desire to perform in a high level ensemble by audition only. For string players, auditions for The Case University Circle Symphony Orchestra and Case Camerata Chamber Orchestra are held during the first week of classes and consist of a prepared solo, orchestral excerpts, and scales. Please visit The Case University Circle Symphony Orchestra page to download the orchestral excerpts and to sign up for your audition slot. 

*All wind and brass players or percussionists joining Symphonic Winds or Symphony Orchestra will need to sign up for auditions through the Symphonic Winds audition page. 

Camerata Chamber Orchestra
The Case Camerata Chamber Orchestra is open to all CWRU students, faculty, and community members by audition who play string instruments and who desire to perform in a high level ensemble by audition only. For string players, auditions for The Case University Circle Symphony Orchestra and Case Camerata Chamber Orchestra are held during the first week of classes and consist of a prepared solo, orchestral excerpts, and scales. CHOIRS
Case Concert Choir
Case Concert Choir holds auditions each semester, and membership is by audition only. Auditions for Case Concert Choirs are held the first two weeks of classes by appointment only. Interested students are also welcome and encouraged to attend open rehearsals before auditioning. University Chorale
Membership into University Chorale is open to all students, faculty, and staff. There are no auditions for this ensemble, but students will be placed into sections by they vocal range and timbre. To join the University Chorale, please attend the first class time or any of the open rehearsals before the Drop/Add date. Case Men’s Glee Club
Membership into Case Men’s Glee Club is open to all students, faculty, and staff. There are no auditions for this ensemble, but students will be placed into sections by they vocal range and timbre. To join the Case Men’s Glee Club, please attend the first class time or any of the open rehearsals before the drop/add date. 

HISTORICAL PERFORMANCE PRACTICE
Collegium Musicum 
Participation in Collegium Musicum is open to CWRU/CIM students and requires an audition for membership. Auditions are by appointment only. For more information and to schedule an audition, please contact the director, Allison Monroe (allison.monroe@case.edu). 

Baroque Orchestra
The Baroque Orchestra is open to all CWRU and CIM students and requires an audition for membership. Auditions are held the first Wednesday of the semester during the class meeting time, and consists of a prepared baroque excerpt of your choice and sight-reading.  New students are permitted to audition on modern instruments; returning students are strongly encouraged to audition on baroque instruments. Baroque Chamber Ensembles
Participation in Baroque Chamber Ensembles is open to all CWRU students in the Historical Performance Practice program and CWRU/CIM students who have been in the Baroque Orchestra for at least one semester, and requires an audition for membership. Auditions are held the first Wednesday of the semester during the class meeting time. 

Baroque Dance
The Baroque Dance Ensemble is open to all students and does not require an audition. For more information, please contact the director, Elena Mullins (ecm74@case.edu). 

Early Music Singers
Early Music Singers is open to all students and requires an audition for membership. Auditions are by appointment only. For more information and to schedule your audition, please contact the director, Elena Mullins (ecm74@case.edu).

OTHER
Percussion Ensemble
The Percussion Ensemble is open to all students with an interest in percussion instruments and music. Auditions are by appointment only, and consist of both a prepared snare solo and mallet solo, plus any other material they feel best demonstrates their skills. Klezmer Music Ensemble
The Klezmer Music Ensemble is open to all CWRU and CIM instrumentalists and vocalists, by audition only. Auditions will be held the first week of classes, either by appointment or during the first class meeting time. Keyboard Ensemble
Keyboard Ensemble is designed for music majors whose primary instrument is piano. Non-majors who are pianists and majors whose primary instrument is not piano may enroll with instructor permission following a successful audition. Popular Music Ensemble
The Popular Music Ensemble is open to all students and requires a part placement audition during the first class of the semester. For more information, please contact the director, Dr. Robert Walser (robert.walser@case.edu).  

String & Piano Chamber Music*
This ensemble requires concurrent enrollment in either the Case University Circle Symphony Orchestra or the Case Camerata Chamber Orchestra. This ensemble is comprised of smaller chamber groups (string and piano) coached by CIM faculty within the Joint Music Program. Please see the Symphony Orchestra audition information and sign up. Woodwind & Brass Chamber Music*
This ensemble requires concurrent enrollment in either the Case University Circle Symphony Orchestra or Symphonic Winds. This ensemble is comprised of smaller chamber groups (woodwind and brass) coached by CIM faculty within the Joint Music Program. Please see the Symphonic Winds audition information and sign up. Miscellaneous Ensembles*
A handful of affiliated CIM faculty within the Joint Music Program coach additional studio classes. These include guitar (classical/jazz), horn, flute, and saxophone. Students are typically enrolled in applied music lessons while enrolled in the corresponding studio ensemble. These classes do not fulfill primary ensemble requirements and require concurrent enrollment in either the Case University Circle Symphony Orchestra or the Case Camerata Chamber Orchestra (excluding guitar). *CIM Ensemble Offerings


Applied Music Lessons (MUAP)
All CWRU students can take applied music lessons with affiliated CIM faculty members through our Joint Music Program.

  • Incoming undergraduate music majors will automatically be enrolled in principal applied music lessons (MUAP 121) and Recital Class. Each student will receive notification of their studio placement from the music office in August. Music majors interested in secondary lessons should contact Jennifer Wright or visit the music office during orientation.
  • Recital Class, a required component of primary lessons for music majors, meets every Wednesday, 3:20-4:10 p.m. in Harkness Chapel. Students are required to perform once during the academic year and serve as stage managers the week following their performance.
  • Non-majors and music minors should complete the Request for Registration in Secondary Lessons prior to August 15. Students should make every effort to register for lessons in SIS and contact their CIM Instructor to schedule their weekly lessons time before orientation ends.
  • Graduate students must receive a lesson assignment from their faculty advisor prior to meeting with Jennifer Wright during orientation to register.

Building Access/Practice Rooms/Lockers

CWRU music majors and students enrolled in music ensembles (MUEN) or applied music lessons (MUAP) are provided after-hours access to Haydn Hall and/or Denison Hall. All practice rooms remain open 24/7 and are first come first served with priority given to music majors.

After-hours access will begin August 8 for music majors and on the Monday after drop/add for non-majors. All music majors and CWRU students enrolled in ensembles or lessons will automatically be activated for after-hours access to Denison Hall and Haydn Hall. During orientation through drop/add, Denison Hall operates on extended hours (8am-10pm every day) while Haydn Hall operates within standards business hours (8am-6pm, M-F).

Individuals who require building access but do not fall into the above categories can submit the After-Hours Request Form.
