Teaching for Tomorrow

Matthew Garrett, assistant professor of music education and director of choirs at CWRU, celebrated the release of three publications this year focused on developing critical thinking skills in school music classrooms. In October 2013, Garrett’s article, “An Examination of Critical Thinking Skills in High School Choral Rehearsals” was published in Journal of Research in Music Education, one of the premier academic journals in music education. In April, his research on critical thinking was featured in the National Association for Music Education magazine, Teaching Music. To end a successful academic year, his article, “Teaching for Transfer: Developing Critical Thinking Skills with Adolescent Singers” was published in the May issue of Choral Journal, the national magazine for the American Choral Directors Association. Garrett continues to teach the next generation of music educators by incorporating activities to develop independent musicianship skills both in his classes and choral ensemble rehearsals at CWRU. “We’re not just teaching for today. We’re teaching for what happens down the road, when our students are in leadership positions and they are the individuals making important decisions.”
