B.A. in Music - Program Information
The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music at Case Western Reserve University is for those persons who want to develop their musical skills and knowledge in the context of an excellent, broader education. Included in this group are those persons who plan graduate study or careers in music immediately upon graduation as well as those persons who wish to continue their music studies while simultaneously pursuing a degree in another area.
What makes our program unique is the combination of quality humanistic instruction, close personal advising, and diverse opportunities for study and performance with a nationally-recognized faculty. The program includes private music study with faculty from the Cleveland Institute of Music, and Case offers many performing ensembles to meet individual needs of students.
Concentrations in the B.A. Program
- General Musicianship is a program designed to offer a wide variety of musical experiences in performance, music theory, and music history within the context of a liberal arts education. The program is especially attractive to those persons interested in pursuing a double major in Music and another field of study.
- Music Performance is a program for persons interested in emphasizing their performance skills within the context of a liberal arts education. This program is similar to General Musicianship but with additional applied music study.
- Music History and Literature is a program for persons interested in emphasizing the history of music and music literature. A wide variety of literature courses are offered in such areas as piano, chamber music, symphony, choral music, art songs, opera, and jazz.
- Music Theory is a program for persons interested in emphasizing musical analysis and composition. Theory courses, taught primarily by C.I.M. faculty, are supplemented by the Department of Music's new Center for Music and Technology, featuring the latest composition software and computer/synthesizer hardware.
- Early Music Performance Practice is a program for persons interested in studying the performance practices of the Baroque and pre-Baroque periods. The program is supported by a variety of ensembles featuring music of this time performed on the Kulas Collection of Historical Instruments.
- Audio Recording Technology is a professional program for persons interested in becoming audio recording engineers or working in recording studios. State-of-the-art facilities, frequent opportunities for hands-on-studio time, and Case's national reputation in electrical engineering contribute to this program's appeal.
